Fill using draft entities

This topic explains how to make a fill using draft entities in a Pro engineer and Creo drawing.

Just like hatching a draft entity boundary, to make a fill using draft entities you need to have a closed boundary. Like I did while explaining draft entity hatching (See Hatching using draft entities), I take some rectangle and hole entities to explain this. The method is same for both Creo and ProE.

To fill the rectangle, Select all 4 line entities manually by holding ctrl key or by selecting them all at one using box. Next, you need to click the hatch/fill button. This button is only active when you select a draft entity. Normally it is grayed out.


This button is available at two locations in Creo as shown in the picture below. Marked with thick red box in the picture.

In ribbon, Under Sketch tab → Edit.
In ribbon, Under Layout tab → Edit.

In Pro Engineer WF4 and previous versions, this button is available at Edit drop down list.

Next the system will ask you to enter a name for the fill. This will be displayed in the message area. Continue with any name.

A hatch will be displayed now and you will see a menu manager shown on the left. These are the options available to customize the hatch. Since we want a solid fill, just click the Fill button in the menu manager.

Now the options for the hatch grays out and fill options becomes active. (Picture shown on the right).

Now click “Done”. The menu manager disappears and you get the solid fill.

At any time, you can double click the hatch to open the menu manager and customize it.

There are four options available for fill at this point. Color, Save, Retrieve and Hatch. (Picture shown on the right). Clicking “hatch” will take you to the previous step and the fill turns into hatch.

Color option – To select the color for the fill, click this button. A color map window

You can create a new color or modify an exiting color from this window.

Save option – If you want to save a color for future use in this drawing or any other drawing, use this option. When you click this option, it prompts you to enter a name. Continue with a name. That’s it. The new color is saved now.

This new color is saved in the current working directory by default. It is saved in .xch format.

Retrieve option – To retrieve the saved fill or hatch, click this button. A window opens up now like the one shown below.

This window shows the default hatch types as well as user created hatch fill types. Select the type you want and then click open.

In this picture, I’ve already created a one in the name “test”. Also you can see that, at the bottom the type shows .xch. This means that this window is looking only for .xch files. You can change this to show all files too simply by clicking it. The default types showed in this window like aluminum, copper, steel etc are for hatch. If you retrieve them for fill option, it wont work. It will work only when you retrieve them for hatch. So you need to retrieve solid colors for fill and hatches for hatch options.

I’ve shown some examples below with different scenarios.

Select all entities including circle and then click fill, the output will be like this.
Select all entities including circle and then click fill, the output will be like this.
Select the rectangle and one circle and then click fill, the output will be like this.
